Indian automotive giant, Tata Motors has forayed into the premium hatchback market by introducing Altroz, a car that would challenge the Hyundai Elite i20 and Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The hatchback is said to available at an introductory price of Rs 5.29 lakh ex-showroom and comes in BS-VI complaint diesel and petrol variants.
The 1.2L petrol unit creates 113 Nm and 86 PS, whereas 1.5 lit. diesel generates 200Nm and 90PS. The car debuts on Tata Motors' latest Alfa platform and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and six color options. The rear door handles of the Altroz are located on the C-pillar. Whereas the rear light cluster is installed on the ends of the lifted rear with 'ALTROZ’ badging at its center.
Incidentally, Tata Motors has also revealed plans to line up four new cars for the next year. Ranging between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, Tata Motors looks to edge ahead of its Indian competitor Mahindra & Mahindra. With this move, the company plans to expand its exposure to 70% Indian passenger vehicle market.
Guenter Butschek, MD, Tata Motors, said that Altroz hatchback has the potential to tap a double-digit market share in the segment, and like Nexon, the company’s ambition is to be on the podium within the hatchback segment.
The company would enter into many new segments during the year and would address the most preferred segments of the Indian market with the most diversified and newest portfolio across body styles and engines.
From electric to petrol, from small to big, Tata Motors would have a diversified portfolio in the coming time, said Butschek, adding that the firm would tap double-digit market share in the overall passenger vehicle segment.
For the record, the gap between Tata Motors and Mahindra is a whopping 50,000 units so far the current fiscal year.
