American telecommunications company, Sprint has reportedly announced a partnership with networking giant Ericsson for building a virtualized core Internet of Things (IoT) network and an operating system (OS).
Ivo Rook, senior vice president, Sprint, said that the new IoT network will be 5G ready, where the network and OS will use Ericsson's IoT Accelerator platform. He further stated that by combining their strategy with Ericsson's expertise, they will set up a platform built specially for the most demanded applications like robotics, edge computing, autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence.
Supposedly, the platform will offer an unparalleled level of security, highest availability and ultra-low-latency at the chip level. Being virtualized and distributed, the network would reduce the distance between the device generating data and the IoT application processing it. To support particular latency, privacy and security requirements, nodes will apparently be distributed straight to the company’s premise.
Further, on the data accumulated, the IoT OS will purportedly offer immediate intelligence while combining managed services, data management, device management and connectivity management.
Citing sources closer to the matter, all the information collected will be managed securely with world-class security on the chip level. The OS will provide full subscription lifecycle management and monitoring of data usage and billing, as well as the configuration and updates of software and firmware will be managed for every device.
The sources also informed that all IoT devices at application management, cloud orchestration management, service resource fulfilment and network operations center monitoring locations will be provided service assurance for by the managed services.
As per records, Sprint had recently revealed that after the launch of 5G network at the beginning of next year, it plans to work with LG to introduce the first 5G smartphone in the U.S. by early 2019.
