Germany based Lidl has reportedly announced that the company would begin rolling out reusable polyester bags for loose fruit and vegetables across its stores countrywide. Reportedly, the company claims its initiative to be the first one to offer the consumers an ecofriendly substitute to the disposable plastic bags.
As per trusted sources, the company recently announced that the eco-friendly green bags would be priced at over 69p and would offer the UK customers an option between consuming thin single use plastic bags or buying 100% polyester, easily washed by machine, reusable bags.
Reportedly, the initiative of reusable bag follows the German-owned supermarket chain put in its efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastics. The supermarket chain intended to cut the plastic packaging by 20% by 2022.
According to sources with the knowledge on the matter, Lidl had earlier withdrawn all single-use carrier bags from its United Kingdom supermarkets in 2017, which caused in over 26 million fewer plastic bags being sold yearly. It has been claimed that the company’s complete efforts to remove, substitute or decrease own-brand plastic packaging has resulted in an 8% reduction per store.
Georgina Hall, Head of CSR at Lidl was reportedly quoted stating that the company has always looked in for the ways to reduce the plastic waste ever since it established itself in Great Britain over 25 years ago. The company’s recent announcement is a step closer to help the customers shift to a truly reusable option.
Meanwhile, the clothing and home industry giant Marks & Spencer and UK based supermarket company Iceland have also put their foot forward to cut down on plastic packaging.
