Hyundai Motors, a South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer, is set to export around 27 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks to Germany. The heavy-duty vehicles are set to be used by manufacturing, retail, and logistics firms.
Earlier this week, the automotive giant said that around seven companies, which it declined to name, would start using the German government's funding to bring such vehicles onto the country's roads.
Hyundai further claimed that Germany's Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport has around $1.63 billion (EUR 1.6 billion) in the budget for buying environmental-friendly commercial vehicles. The funding has been provided till 2024.
The long-hauling vehicles deployed in Germany will have a 180-kW hydrogen fuel cell structure and utilize up to seven hydrogen tanks. They will also draw extra power from three batteries.
Apparently, the highest driving range per charge is 400 km (a little under 249 miles), according to Hyundai.
This export of hydrogen-electric trucks to Germany will strengthen the foothold of XCIENT Fuel Cells across Europe. As of July, 47 vehicles have already been exported to Switzerland, clocking up over 4 million kilometers on-road.
Earlier in September 2021, the automotive giant said it planned to roll out hydrogen fuel cell versions of all its commercial vehicle models by 2028. It also expressed its interest in introducing a next-gen fuel-cell system in 2023.
Hyundai has mentioned that its long-term objective is to achieve a fuel cell vehicle price point equivalent to a battery electric vehicle by 2030.
Meanwhile, with governments worldwide aiming to reduce the transportation sector’s environmental footprint, several firms in the trucking segment are finding ways to manufacture low and zero-emission vehicles, including ones that use hydrogen.
U.K.-based startup Tevva, for instance, unveiled a hydrogen-electric HGV (heavy goods vehicle) in June. The firm has stated that its vehicles will feature a range of around 310 miles, or just under 500 kilometers.
Additionally, its primary hydrogen-electric truck will weigh 7.5 metric tons, with the later versions estimated to weigh between 12 to 19 metric tons.
