The company aims to streamline its storage solutions with the new Drive app, and replace its existing home & enterprise apps with a single software
Google LLC recently announced the launch of a new app called Drive for desktop that is slated to replace and merge the features of Backup and Sync app and the outgoing Drive File Stream. The move will enable users to sync and upload files easily by using one application instead of using the Backup and Sync app as well the Drive File stream. Moreover, it will aid businesses to manage their commercial storage needs.
The new Drive app is compatible with Macs and Windows PCs and will enable users to sync data from external storage devices like flash drives and the cloud, and upload and sync videos & photos to Google Drive and/or Google Photos, cited sources with relevant information.
A scheduled integration is expected to take place between the Google Drive app and both Microsoft Outlook and Google Meet. Speaking of the transition timeline, Backup and Sync users will start receiving alerts to switch to the Drive app over the next few weeks starting from July 19. Users can then shift to the new Drive app to continue syncing files since the Backup and Sync app will stop functioning from October 1st.
In related news, Google Meet has started limiting free users to a duration of 60 minutes for group calls. Google had been contemplating on this move since before the pandemic hit.
While one of one calling will continue to have a time limit of 24 hours, users will now get notifications at 55 minutes for group calls, warning them that the meeting will end soon. However, Google Workspace users will be able to host both group and one-on-one calls for up to 24 hours.
