Daimler Truck AG and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) have reportedly extended their existing partnership in which the China-based energy storage specialist will supply lithium-ion batteries for the Mercedes-Benz electric truck beyond 2030.
For those unaware, Daimler truck AG is one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers with over 100,000 employees. It aims to offer only zero-emission vehicles in Europe, North America, and Japan latest by 2039.
Having said that, Daimler is planning to start producing Mercedes-Benz’s long-haul electric truck called the eActros in the year 2024.
As per the new agreement, the batteries supplied by CATL will be a combination of ultra-long cycle life with high energy density as well as the fast charging ability to meet the distinctive requirements of electric trucks.
Daimler and CATL have also planned to jointly develop and design advanced battery cells to suit the truck’s specific requirements. The focus is expected to remain on high modularity and scalability, cited sources with relevant information.
The two companies had entered into a global partnership agreement back in 2019 for the supply of lithium-ion battery cell modules for the electric trucks eActros as well as the freight carriers eCascadia and eM2.
Martin Daum, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler Truck was quoted saying that this partnership plays a critical role for the duo in achieving zero-carbon dioxide emission. A wider range of customer-centric electric trucks is expected to begin production from 2021 onwards, he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman and CEO of CATL Dr. Robin Zeng, mentioned that this shared vision will strengthen Daimler’s market position in the carbon neutrality space.
CATL, with its one-of-a-kind battery solution for commercial vehicles, will ensure higher reliability in Daimler’s electric trucks, cited experts keeping track of the business trends. Featuring an LFP chemistry system with zero fading in 1500 cycles and advanced cell-to-pack technology will further affirm high energy density at affordable costs.
