The British government has reportedly informed the country’s telecommunications firms not to install new 5G kit of Chinese multinational technology giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. after September 2021. Sources close to the matter stated that the recent move comes amidst the effort to prevent the use of Huawei’s equipment in high speed mobile networks.
The U.K. government has ordered all the Huawei components integrated in the country’s 5G network systems to be removed by the end of 2027. Sources confirmed that the recent announcement was made following the debate over new telecom legislation in the U.K. parliament, providing a timeline for equipment removal from 5G networks.
While China has criticized Britain’s decision, Huawei expressed its disappointment after the government decided it to exclude it from the 5G-roll outs. It is to be noted that Britain introduced a new law in which companies could face fines up to USD 133,140 (100,000 pounds) if they violate the ban.
Oliver Dowden, Britain’s Digital Minister has reportedly developed plans to completely remove various equipment associated with high-risk vendors from the country’s 5G networks. He further mentioned that this will take place through considerable power of identification which will focus on banning the telecommunications equipment that could be a risk to national security
If reports are to be believed, the U.K. government has announced various plans which will aid in diversifying the 5G supply chain, such as an initial investment of around 250 million pounds, strategic collaborations with Japanese multinational information technology NEC Corp. and launch of numerous research facilities.
It is worth mentioning that Britain has already banned the purchase of the new Huawei 5G kit by the end of 2020. At that time, the government claimed that the decision was made over the increasing concerns regarding U.S. sanctions on chip technology that could result in supply chain disruptions.
